ABOUT OUR CLUB

Ascot Park Bowling Club has 3 tift dwarf greens of very high standard and bowls are played all year round. Although pennant bowls are not played during the winter, social bowls are played on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.

Night Owls and Indoor Bowls are also played at the club.

Our story began in 1957. Residents in the Ascot Park area arranged a meeting to inaugurate a Bowling Club in the district. In January 1959 the site on Marion Road was chosen. The 1st opening of the A.P.B.C. was held in 1960. With the introduction of Indoor Bowls the club grew rapidly and had to limit membership to 220. As years progressed the club house had to be extended as membership reached 250 men and 135 ladies.

Over the years the Club has been very successful at winning Pennants,State Titles as well as Championship titles.

At present the Club has a mixed membership, ranging from teenagers to the high 80's. So you see it is a sport for both young and old. To be involved is most important. meeting other people and making new friends can be most rewarding.

Ascot Park Bowling Club is known as the friendly club. If you are thinking of joining a Club please consider us - we would be happy to see you.

BUILDING PROJECT

CLUB PLANS FOR THE FUTURE.

The Club (well known as the �friendly Club�) is celebrating its 50^th Anniversary in 2010. Plans for special events and functions have been made and 2010 will be a year of excitement for the Club members.

One of the projects that will be commenced is the rebuilding of the Clubrooms. These facilities have been built in various stages during the 50 years of operations usually on the basis of member voluntary assistance and quite often using second hand materials. The building, whilst structurally sound, requires significant improvements to upgrade it to meet current requirements and also to modernise the building so that members and users are attracted to use those facilities.

After intense investigation, a Building Renovation Plan was drawn up and tabled to the members at a Special General Meeting. The approved project will involve expenditure up to $500,000. A builder has been appointed (Care Constructions) and plans have been submitted to the Marion Council for building approval.

The Building Renovation Plan includes a Strategic Plan, a Risk Assessment of the Project, and Funding Models. This Plan has been tabled to the Marion Council which has reacted quite positive particularly being impressed with its professional nature. However both the Council and the Club Administrators understand that there is still work to be undertaken for it to reach the stage where it can be submitted under the yet to be announced �Marion Council Partnership� programme - which programme is designed to support Clubs etc with projects of this nature. The additional information that needs to be included is as follows:-

A strategy directed towards Club, social groups etc within close proximity to encourage more usage of the Club's new facilities so that it can be promoted within the Marion Council area as a point of community service.

Acknowledgement from Bowls SA (the state body for lawn bowls) that there would be an increased potential for the Club to be used by the State body for State and National events.

This is an essential project for the Club for it to survive and grow in these demanding times. The Club, even with its existing facilities, is providing significant service to its members, Bowls SA and to the community generally. With the new facilities, the ability to provide these services will be significantly enhanced and will be the base for the Club to develop and grow its membership and services. The long term strategy (i.e. 10 years) is for the Club to join with the Marion Council to build a new sporting centre for sport in the area which will have a budget 4 to 5 times greater that this project - for this to occur however the Club needs to build its already sound financial base to service the increased commitment and the first step is this project.

The benefits to the members are seen as follows:-

The project will result in modern disability access and facilities.
The modernising of the dining and lounge areas (presently the office area that will be relocated to the rear of the building) and the ability to separate the area hired out to the community from that used by the members will result in more opportunities for increased revenue.
It is expected the modern facilities will result also in increased membership
It will provide an opportunity for existing members to become more involved with growing the Club and will give a focus on which to base a recruitment process.

The benefits to the surrounding community are expected to be as follows:-

By refurbishing and to a small extent extending the Clubrooms the Club will be better able to cater for the community by providing up to date facilities and amenities.
The building will be aesthetically more pleasing than the existing one.
The refurbishment includes a separate meeting room that will be available to Community groups.
Because of the improved disabled facilities it is expected there will be an increase in usage.
The Clubrooms are the only community oriented function centre within a 7 kilometre radius that is non-gaming based which will increase usage by the youth, elderly and disadvantaged. It will be likely to attract new interest from the community in addition to a renewed interest from the members.
The physical structure will be in tune with the renewal of the surrounding area and should itself attract interest from the community.
